Fitting a Helmet with Zhik

Zhik are aware that pushing your limits can be a high-risk strategy, and the Aussie brand are more committed than ever to helping you stay safe on the water.

Water sports are getting fast and furious, and whether you're foiling at 40 knots, riding the waves, or a pitchpole plugger mastering new skills, one piece of kit that’s non-negotiable is your helmet.

It might not seem like the most glamorous part of your gear, but it’s arguably the most important when it comes to safety. Here's how to ensure your helmet fits perfectly.

How Should a Helmet Fit?

Firstly, you need a helmet that does the job you need it to do for your sport. The wrong helmet can leave you exposed to injury if it doesn’t give you the coverage you need.

The wrong weight can literally drag you down, preventing buoyancy in the water when you need it most, and poor visibility is not your friend in high-risk situations, either.

A helmet should feel snug without being uncomfortable, sitting evenly on your head.

It should cover your forehead, resting about 1-2 fingers above your eyebrows. The helmet should not shift or wobble, even when you move your head from side to side or up and down.

The fit needs to be firm enough to protect you but still allow for comfort when you're wearing it for long periods.

Making sure it fits before you leave shore is key.

Adjusting the straps and padding is easier without cold, wet fingers and will better ensure that the helmet stays in place.

When done properly, your helmet will feel like a natural extension of your head, allowing you to move freely, but offering unwavering protection.

If it fits well, you should be able to forget you’re wearing it.

Why is it Important to Get the Correct Size?

The correct helmet size is critical in ensuring maximum protection. A helmet that is too loose can move around in a fall, leaving parts of your head vulnerable.

A helmet that is too tight can cause discomfort and limit blood circulation, making it difficult to wear for extended sessions.

In extreme situations, the wrong fit can compromise the helmet's ability to absorb impact, putting your safety at risk.

By choosing the correct size and fit, you ensure that your helmet performs as it was designed to, protecting your head from impacts, minimising the risk of injury, and giving you the confidence to focus on giving your sport everything you’ve got.

How to Determine the Correct Size

Finding the right size is simple, but crucial.

First, measure the circumference of your head using a soft tape measure or a piece of string (just above your eyebrows and around the widest part of the back of your head).

Then, refer to the size chart for specific guidance. Most helmets will offer a range of sizes, so selecting the size closest to your measurement is key.

To double-check the fit, make sure that the helmet doesn’t move when you shake your head, but still feels comfortable on your scalp.

Zhik helmets have adjustable padding, use it to achieve the perfect fit.

Test for Comfort & Fit:

1. Once your helmet is on, move your head up and down and side to side.

2. Ensure that it doesn’t move around or feel too tight.

3. Test the chin strap when it’s secured, the helmet should stay in place without pinching your chin or neck.

4. You should feel the padding against your head without any pressure points.

How to Care for Your Helmet

A helmet’s protection can only be guaranteed if it’s properly maintained. Here’s how to care for your helmet to ensure it stays in top condition:

Keep It Clean

After each use, rinse the helmet with fresh water to remove saltwater, sand, or debris. Clean the interior with mild soap and warm water. Avoid harsh chemicals that might degrade the materials.

Store It Properly

When you’re not using your helmet, store it in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Never leave it in your car on a hot day, extreme heat can weaken the materials over time.

Check for Damage

After every session, inspect your helmet for any visible cracks, dents, or wear and tear. If you notice anything unusual, it’s time to replace the helmet to ensure your protection.

Replace After Impact

If your helmet has taken a hit, whether it’s from an accidental fall or an intense impact, it should be replaced immediately. Even if there are no visible cracks, the integrity of the helmet may have been compromised.

Safety in water sports starts with the right gear, and the helmet is your first line of defence.
