Building a Legacy, Mystic Helmets for all Watersports

In 2023 Mystic reset global expectations of what a modern watersports helmet should be, with the launch of the Vandal Series. 

Based on Mystic’s previous top-tier model the MK8 X; a premium watersports helmet known for blending robust protection with fine-tuned comfort.

 

The Vandal helmet utilises the high tensile strength of an ABS outer shell for impact resistance, paired with an EVA foam liner for excellent shock absorbency. 

The 180 Dial Adjuster provides an improved overall fit, while the 3D Mesh Pads allow riders to fine-tune the helmet's internal shape for personal comfort.

The Vandal Pro took the core design and refined it, minimizes bulk, maximizes comfort, and strictly maintaining the CE and UKCA safety approvals.

Using the same impact-resistant ABS outer shell, Mystic incorporated EPP foam into the lining for greater shock absorption, less weight, and a noticeably sleeker profile.

The Dial 360 system revolutionises fit adjustment, fine-tuning the inner lining to keep the helmet balanced and secure. Inside, the Mesh Comfort Lining creates a soft, beanie-like feel that eliminates pressure points and enhances all-day comfort.

However, what really makes these helmets distinct from the competition isn’t their unique safety features, or even the materials they are produced from, but their ergonomic design and superior fit. 

What truly sets the Vandal Series apart, however, isn’t just its materials or safety certification, it’s the ergonomic design and superior fit. 

While many brands rely on third-party manufacturers, Mystic brought their development completely in-house, researching countless head shapes and sizes to create a helmet design that fits as many riders as comfortably as possible. 

Having conquered the wake-style helmet market, Mystic set their sights on solving a new challenge: head safety in surfing.

 

Fit and Function for ‘In Water’ Sports

Mystic is known for kiting, wakeboarding, and foiling, but surfing has always been core to the brand. However, most existing watersports helmets aren’t ideal for duck-diving, as water pressure pushes against the helmet and disrupts flow.

The guiding principle for Mystic’s new surf-specific helmet was simple: surfers already wear wetsuit hoods, so what if a helmet could feel like a hood? Low-profile, close-fitting, familiar, no compromise, simply part of the surfer’s setup.

First the fit needed to be developed, making a helmet that works for every person in the same way. Mystic found that head shape variation is greatest at the back of the head. By introducing an adjustable rear section, riders can customise the shape to allow water to flow smoothly along the sides without catching on the helmet.

Most helmets pull back underwater. Mystic’s surf helmets don’t, thanks to their streamlined outer shell that minimises resistance, keeping the helmet locked in place even when punching through waves.

Ventilation channels at the front guide air and water out through the sides and rear, while the downward-angled brim prevents water from flushing into the eyes after a duck dive.

 

Impact Cap 

Made from neoprene and 10mm of EVA foam, the Mystic Impact Cap is a low-profile soft-shell helmet built around the design principles above.

The EVA foam not only absorbs impact and resists water but also moulds to the rider’s head for a personalised fit.

Padding extends down through the strap area to protect the cheeks and temples. Perforated ear coverage shields from wind and water while maintaining clear hearing.

Available in three sizes with an Adjustable Chin Strap and Velcro Fit System at the rear, the Impact Cap offers a precise, secure fit for every head shape. Lightweight and flexible, it delivers all-day comfort without compromising protection.

 

Legacy Helmet

Building on the success of the Impact Cap, Mystic developed the Legacy Helmet to combine hardshell protection with the same in-water fit and functionality.

Delivering reliable impact resistance in water requires balancing shock absorption with freedom of movement. Mystic’s solution: an ABS hardshell for protection against sharp or heavy impacts, paired with a soft-shell EVA lining for comfort and resistance to smaller bumps.

After testing countless combinations of EVA foams and ABS shell densities, Mystic achieved a helmet that meets the same CE safety approval (EN 1385) as the Vandal Pro, without adding unnecessary weight or bulk.

Mystic also advanced other design features, including sound-optimised ear pads that block cold wind while allowing clear, whistle-free sound passage.

This meticulous attention to detail earned the Mystic Legacy Helmet the 2025 Red Dot Award, one of the world’s most respected design accolades.
