6 Reasons to try SUP Yoga

With SUP boards being big and sturdy enough to act as a floating yoga mat, it was only a matter of time before SUP Yoga was born. Yogis everywhere are now using SUP boards to improve and challenge their practice and Stand Up Paddle boarders should give it a go too, here’s why…

1. That Giddy Kiddy Feeling

There’s no better feeling of accomplishment than becoming continuously better at your chosen sport(s), however we sometimes forget the buzz you get from something new. Stand Up Paddlers will feel like kids again when trying SUP Yoga for the first time – you’ll fall in, laugh a lot and see a whole new side to your board.

2. A Core Workout Like No Other

Both SUP and yoga separately rely heavily on the core muscles – merge the two and you have perhaps the best core workout ever! When you do yoga poses while floating on your SUP board you need to engage your core fully into the pose, otherwise you’ll fall in – you’ll work those bad boys like never before!

3. Reap Yoga Benefits

Try SUP Yoga and you will reap all the benefits of a great yoga class. You can do all the same poses on a SUP board – don’t be fooled into thinking it’s a dumbed down version. Yoga is well known for promoting a good mind-body-spirit connection, as well as increasing flexibility, strength, balances and overall happiness and wellbeing. It also helps you relax and sleep well. Ah!

4. Deepen Your Connection with the Water

SUP really helps you connect with nature and SUP Yoga can help you deepen that connection further. Yoga involves creating the elements of earth, water, fire, air, and space in your bodies’ alignment and when you do that outdoors, floating on the water it allows you to feel at one with the natural world.

5. It Will Challenge You

Even if you’re a SUP pro, unless you already practice yoga, you’ll be starting afresh. Similarly, even if you’re a master yogi, you’ll find SUP Yoga a new challenge. Regardless of which direction you’re coming from, SUP Yoga will challenge you and as we all know, challenge is good for body and soul.

6. Develop an Amazing Warm Up

Take some SUP Yoga classes (or look up the main poses on the Internet and practice with friends) and you’ll soon have the knowledge you need to build your own warm up and cool down routines, that you can do on your board before and after you paddle. More time on the water – bonus!
