Back then Google didn't exist and G-Land was a far-flung jungle expedition for only the globe's most intrepid surfers. Today, Google provides us with 305,000 results under the search phrase "Indonesia surf camps" and G-Land looks like the Super Bank on a Saturday. Today, towing at Tom's heels are his sons Patrick and Frank. In so many waves, this trip is very different from their 1994 trip. But on second thought -- when you get down to it and out in the water -- nothing has changed at all.

| During a bit of a flat spell Koa, Alex and Stu hit the beach. Strolling the coastal villages way up here, it doesn't take too long to forget the madness of Kuta, Jakarta or Padang. And it just so happens there's a particularly weird wave up here, too -- a wave that Dillon, Brady and Bruno had discovered about a month before, when everywhere else was flat. Though they had the honor of being only the second group to surf it, Koa, Alex and Stu only got a taste.... Just wait until we show you this place in all its glory in the coming weeks.

| One of the filmers, Jimmy Kinnaird, likes to torture each fresh passenger on the Tip 2 Tip mission. He's been on most of the trips and has been there to document some of the best days and biggest scores. So, what he does is put together these 10-minute edits of absolute gold to show the new crew on their way out to sea. This causes the froth level to get dangerously high as the waiting game ensues. But it's also a brilliant tactic, because when it's time to get in the water -- no matter if the waves are all-time or not -- you can be sure the boys will be firing on all cylinders.

| And Koa thought he covered a lot of fresh ground way back in Chapter 1. He had no idea. For a solid month before this trip Dean, Dillon and Bruno had been zigzagging northern Indo, discovering never-surfed-before waves more than they were dropping into more familiar locales. So when they passed the baton to Koa, Alex and Stu at the docks, they let loose a few secrets just to pump them up and prepare them for what was surely waiting for them in the coming weeks. | Dean Brady has been going to Indo for a long time now and, naturally, not everything is the same as it used to be. But nothing is so drastically different than the handful of reefs that were shifted by the earthquake/tsunami of December, 2004. | There's nothing more painful than being confined to a boat and at the mercy of "majority rules" in the land of perfect lefts and rights. But this was the position young Wilko found himself in with natural-footers - and hence, right junkies - Kekoa Bacalso and Ben Dunn. Things got worse for Wilko when just as the crew had given up hope of scoring any perfect surf alone, they stumbled upon a beautiful beast (you'll see that on Friday). | When the doctors got done cutting out the 3/4 of staph-infected skull in Timmy's head in December, 2005, they said he would be a vegetable. They were very, very wrong. Today, Timmy is directing Albert Taylor over to the left he discovered almost 10 years ago. The memories flood back as if they were yesterday's. Bruno, Brady and Dillon watch the left cautiously as it grinds like lightning over a few inches of reef. Timmy grabs his board and turns to the boys: "We're out there!" he shouts, then jumps overboard. He's not wearing his helmet. He shouldn't even be here.

| On your average Mentawais boat trip these days, you're at sea for 10 nights and you cover about 300 miles. In those 300 miles, you're likely to check around 13 spots. So are about 16 other surfers at the exact same time. And more often than you would think, one or two of those other surfers are the same guys you see out at your local beachbreak on Saturday mornings. That's the reality in modern Mentawais. Unless, of course, you blow life off and check out for six months on a boat. Then you'll see there's still hope floating out there.

| On your standard 2-week boat trip, land is just an intangible film reel of white sand, coconut palms and distant mountains flickering on by. On your standard boat trip, you pass by at least one perfect wave a day because it's just too difficult to reach by boat under such cramped time constraints. | Chalk one up for Tin Boat. It won't be the last. It's been a grueling leg of Tip 2 Tip for Brady, Garut and Ricardo: the weather, the treks overland... the waiting. As the Quest 1 sits in deeper water, licking her wounds after copping a pounding across the Lombok Strait and on westward, Albert zings Tin Boat into every tight corner, snooping and peeking, hoping and wishing. And then he's on the radio, telling the boys the weird, but good, news. It sure don't look like Indo, but... oh, it's Indo.

| On average, 2,478 millimeters (or 98 inches) of rain dumps on the lowlands of Indonesia per year. From April to October, it's hotter, rains more frequently, and the ocean is angrier. | Indonesia's first generation of traveling surfers were men in search of tubes and solitude. Nowhere else in the world did waves grind away with such sustained, balmy, vacant perfection. In semi-final, Parko and Smith matched up in one of the most highly anticipated heats of the event. Parko raised his game again and knocked out the South African. In Semi 2, local Vicco surfer Adam Robertson pulled off a dramatic win over Freddy P in the final 5 minutes. Clutch.
